Conoco began in 1875 as the Continental Oil and Transportation Company. Through many mergers, etc, Conoco had a varied history and in 1998 Conoco became independent and re-started operations as Continental Oil Company. In 2001, Conoco agreed to merge with Phillips Company. That merger was completed in 2002.
